After a decade of hard work and dedication, local snowboarder Sam Smith has earned an entry to the 2022 Winter Olympics. It’s been a long journey for Smith, who started snowboarding when he was 18 years old with the crazy dream of making it to the Olympics by 20. After competing in his first pro halfpipe event at 22, Smith came one spot away from making it to the 2018 Olympics at 25. Now, at 29 years old, he has achieved his goal and will be representing his hometown in Beijing this February. Smith credits much of his success to the support of his family and friends throughout his journey. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without them," said Smith. "They were always there cheering me on even when I felt like giving up." He also expressed gratitude for all those who helped him get where he is today—from coaches and sponsors to fellow athletes and fans alike. Smith is now looking forward to training for the upcoming games and hopes that he can inspire others with his story. “I want people to know that anything is possible if you set your mind to it," said Smith. "You just have to keep pushing yourself even when things get tough."
