He is the most beloved saint in Serbia, A gift bringer and protector of the people. On his feast day, families come together to celebrate, And on St Nicholas’ kids were given presents before WWII. His popularity has endured for centuries and he is still revered today, For his kindness and generosity that will never fade away. In Serbia he is known as Sveti Nikola or Djurdjevdan, A celebration of his life that brings joy to every man. He was born in Patara near modern-day Turkey in 270 AD, And became Bishop of Myra at a young age so full of glee. It was said he had a secret love for children everywhere, Giving them gifts and bringing joy with no need for care. He would give bags of gold coins to those who were poor or in need, Making sure they could have food on their tables with no greed. He has become an international symbol of giving and charity, An inspiration to us all throughout history. So let us remember this special saint from Serbia each year on December 19th or 6th (Julian calendar), Celebrating his life and the legacy he left behind for us all to remember!
