It is with great sadness that the world of football mourns the passing of Just Fontaine, a true icon and one of the greatest players to ever grace the game. Fontaine was born in Marrakech, Morocco in 1933 and moved to France at a young age. He began his career playing for USM Casablanca before moving to Stade de Reims in 1953. It was here that he truly made his mark on French football, scoring an incredible 122 goals in six seasons and helping them win three consecutive league titles between 1956-1959. In 1958, Fontaine was selected for France's World Cup squad and it was here that he wrote himself into history books by becoming the only player to score 13 goals at a single World Cup tournament - a record which may never be broken. His performance during this tournament also helped France reach their first ever World Cup final where they were eventually beaten by Brazil 5-2. Fontaine retired from professional football in 1962 after scoring an impressive total of 199 goals throughout his career but his legacy will live on forever as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game. His name will always be remembered fondly amongst French fans who had the pleasure of watching him play and those who were lucky enough to witness him break records at international level. The entire footballing community would like to extend their deepest condolences to Fontaine's family and friends during this difficult time and celebrate his life as one of true greatness both on and off the pitch.
