Validation of Feelings

This poem explores how when people are hurting our first instinct is often to try and change their feelings but what helps more is validating those feelings by listening closely and offering empathy instead of advice.

When people are hurting, our first thought is to change their feelings. But what they need more is validation of those feelings. We want to share our own perspective, and make them feel better. But it's not as comforting as showing we understand theirs altogether. Sometimes a hug or kind words can help in the moment, But without understanding, emotions won't be regulated or atonement. So let us take a step back and really listen close, And offer empathy instead of advice that may not be the most chose. Let us accept how they feel and not try to alter it in any way, For this will give them space to express their emotions each day. We must validate their feelings before we can start helping out, For this will allow them to trust us and have no doubt. It's ok for someone else's experience to differ from ours, And validating their feelings allows for trust that endures.
