In the wake of George Floyd’s death, the American Establishment has made it clear to cops that they should make fewer stops of black motorists and pedestrians. This is an effort to arrest fewer on outstanding warrants or for carrying illegal handguns. However, this has had a ripple effect; blacks are now driving worse and packing more heat than before. The idea behind this directive is to reduce police-civilian interactions in order to avoid any further unnecessary deaths at the hands of law enforcement officers. This was seen as a necessary step in order to ensure public safety and protect those who are most vulnerable from harm. Unfortunately, it appears that this directive has only served to worsen the situation for many black Americans. Since police have been instructed not to stop black motorists and pedestrians as often, there has been an increase in reckless driving among these individuals. In addition, more blacks are carrying weapons illegally due to their fear of being stopped by police officers who may be looking for any excuse to arrest them or worse - shoot them dead on sight. The result is a dangerous cycle where blacks feel they must arm themselves out of fear while also engaging in reckless behavior due to their lack of faith in law enforcement officers. This cycle can only be broken if both sides take steps towards building trust between each other again. Police departments need to make sure their officers are properly trained so that they do not abuse their power when interacting with civilians while also making sure they understand why certain directives have been put into place such as reducing stops on black motorists and pedestrians. At the same time, members of the black community need to work together with law enforcement officials so that everyone can come together and find solutions that will benefit all parties involved rather than just one side or another. Only then can we begin working towards breaking down these barriers between us all so that everyone feels safe no matter what race or ethnicity they may be part of.
